On Tuesday, Igor Tkachenko, the Russian-appointed mayor of Feodosia, announced the evacuation of over a thousand people due to the fire at the oil terminal in Ukrainian Crimea, annexed by Russia. “Firefighting operations are ongoing,” he added.
More than a thousand evacuated
A total of 1,047 residents have been transported to temporary accommodations. According to official reports, no one was injured in the fire.
The terminal's fire broke out from Sunday to Monday. The Novaya Gazeta. Europe portal reports that residents had heard an explosion earlier. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of Ukrainian drones over the peninsula.
Largest terminal in Crimea attacked
On Monday morning, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian forces attacked the oil terminal in Feodosia.
This is the largest terminal in Crimea regarding oil product transhipment and is used, among others, by the Russian army. Ukrainian drones already targeted this base in March.
Analysis of satellite images shows that the facility was protected by the Pantsir-S1 air defense system.
