EU hits Iran with sanctions over ballistic missiles to Russia

The European Union has issued a firm statement condemning Iran's actions related to providing ballistic missiles to Russia. Josep Borrell, the EU's chief diplomat, announced the imposition of sanctions on individuals and entities involved in this practice and considered additional steps against the Iranian aviation sector.

In a statement issued on Friday, EU's chief diplomat Josep Borrell unequivocally criticized Iran for escalating its military support for Russia. He noted that Russia is using Iranian ballistic missiles in massive attacks on Ukraine, aimed primarily at critical energy infrastructure and the civilian population.

Iran is not only supplying drones and ammunition but also ballistic missiles, which could lead to further suffering and destruction in Ukraine – said Borrell.

The EU's chief diplomat announced swift actions from the EU and its international partners, including imposing new, significant sanctions. These will target both individuals and entities responsible for arms transfers. Additionally, the EU will consider sanctioning Iran's aviation sector.

The EU leaders' unanimous position has always been clear. The European Union will respond swiftly and in coordination with international partners, including with new and significant restrictive measures against Iran – emphasized Borrell.

Despite clear reports, Tehran denied that it supplied weapons to Russia. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has chosen not to refute this information.

It is worth noting that last week, the first reports emerged that Iran had delivered short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. On Monday, the European Commission confirmed the "credible information provided by allies."

It is not only the European Union that intends to take action. On Tuesday, the United States announced its own sanctions against Iran for delivering missiles to Russia. The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, also announced similar steps.
