The politicians left for Kyiv on Saturday, but for security reasons, their departure was not made public. They announced their visit themselves on Sunday morning on platform X, already upon arriving in the capital of Ukraine, posting a photo from the Kyiv railway station.
First diplomatic visit
"From day one of the war, the EU has stood by the side of Ukraine. From day one of our mandate, we are reaffirming our unwavering support to the Ukrainian people," wrote Costa on X.
The new head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, expressed that it is a privilege to be in Kyiv alongside Costa and Kos. The Estonian emphasized that this is her first diplomatic visit since taking office. "In my first visit since taking up office, my message is clear: the European Union wants Ukraine to win this war. We will do whatever it takes for that," assured the politician.
Two weeks earlier, at the end of his term, her predecessor Josep Borrell visited Kyiv.
Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos wrote that all three came with a strong message that "Ukraine you can count on Europe’s unwavering and strong support on your path to freedom, peace and a fully European future."
In Kyiv, EU politicians are to meet, among others, with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The topics of discussion are to include the current situation at the front and Ukraine's European perspective.
On Sunday, the mandate of the new European Commission and the new President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, officially commenced.
Medvedev reacts to the visit in Kyiv
Dmitry Medvedev reacted to the politicians' visit. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation wrote on his English-language account on platform X that "Costa, the new European Council head, and the Russophobic 'top EU diplomat' Kallas turns up in Kiev on his first day. It shows the priority is prolonging the war, not ensuring the wellbeing of the EU. Happy now, Europeans?"
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Medvedev has become one of the main spokespersons for the Kremlin's aggressive rhetoric, repeatedly threatening the West with nuclear war and the "end of civilization."
