EU leaders unite for increased defense funding amidst US tension
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that we are all ready to accelerate actions on increasing defense funding. On Monday, an informal summit of EU leaders dedicated to security issues took place in Brussels. The President of the European Commission indicated that the Union is open to dialogue with the USA but will not be intimidated by Donald Trump's administration.
Capabilities, funds, and partnership were the priorities emphasized by Antonio Costa, summarizing the informal summit held in Brussels.
The President of the European Council noted that the leaders present at the meeting agreed that "even greater defense funding" in Europe is necessary.
Costa emphasized that it is in Europe's interest to continue supporting the fighting in Ukraine.
We will respond firmly to the USA
The President of the European Council emphasized that the United States remains a friend and partner, and this relationship will endure. While acknowledging the existence of challenges and differing perspectives, he stressed the need to address them through dialogue and solutions while firmly upholding European values and interests.
The President of the European Commission also addressed this issue.
Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged the high stakes involved, stating that the EU has engaged in discussions on pragmatic cooperation with the U.S. She emphasized that the Union is prepared to engage constructively with the Trump administration but will respond firmly to any unfair actions. She also expressed concern over Trump’s decisions regarding Mexico and Canada, viewing them as unfavorable.
She also pointed out that defense spending must increase.
The President of the European Commission highlighted that this would lead to an increase in public spending.
According to von der Leyen, cooperation with Ukraine's defense industry is an opportunity for joint defense development.
Tusk: Everyone is ready
The head of the Polish government expressed great satisfaction, stating that the meeting was highly productive from the Polish presidency's perspective. He emphasized that the commitment to full solidarity in strengthening defense capabilities was clearly evident.
The meeting, convened during the Polish presidency of the EU Council, focused on security, which is also the main theme of the Polish presidency.
Tusk emphasized the significance of the decision, noting that there is a shared commitment to accelerating efforts to increase defense funding. He also underscored the broad consensus on the necessity of the Eastern Shield’s operation.
The heads of state and government of the "twenty-seven" met on Monday at an informal meeting in Brussels to seek funds for defense financing.
Von der Leyen also announced an EU-UK defense summit, to be held in the UK in May.
