The United States Department of State announced the approval of the sale of 32 F-35A fighters to Romania. These aircraft will play a significant role in the ongoing modernization of the Romanian army, which is transitioning away from Soviet-era armaments. We explain the key features and performance of the F-35A.

Romania will be strengthened with F-35 fighters

Romania will pay more and wait longer for these advanced fighters. Interest in the American-made F-35A is very high, leading to long waiting periods for many countries.

The U.S. agreement with Romania is valued at $7.2 billion. According to the defenseromania portal, the deal includes not only the fighters but also logistical support, training services, flight simulators, and ammunition (air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles). The first delivery of F-35A fighters to Romania is expected in 2031.

"Romania is a key NATO Ally in promoting security and stability in the Black Sea region and beyond. The F-35As will provide Romania with unparalleled air defence capabilities and enhance interoperability among NATO air forces," said Kathleen Kavalec, the United States Ambassador to Romania.

One of the best fighters in the world

In 2023, Romania announced the withdrawal of most Soviet-era weapons, including MiG-21 fighters. Until the F-35A arrives, the strength of the Romanian air force will consist of three squadrons of F-16 fighters, including 32 units purchased from Norway.

The F-35A is a multi-role fighter known for its stealth characteristics (reduced detectability in flight). It measures over 50 feet in length and nearly 36 feet in wingspan. The fighter can reach a speed of Mach 1.8 (over 1,240 mph) and operate at an altitude of up to 49,000 feet.

Standard armament includes a 25 mm gun, but the F-35A can also carry mounted weapons (up to 18,000 pounds). These can include AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9X Sidewinder, AIM-132 ASRAAM missiles, and cluster or guided bombs. Additionally, the F-35A is equipped for electronic warfare.
