German intelligence warns of increase in Russian cyberattacks
German counterintelligence warns of a group of Russian hackers. The group 29155, belonging to the Russian military intelligence service GRU, is responsible for a series of cyberattacks targeting European countries and NATO members.
In a statement issued in cooperation with international partners, including the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), German counterintelligence indicates that group 29155 carried out espionage and sabotage operations targeting international goals.
German counterintelligence listed, among other things, attacks on websites and publishing stolen data.
Action is necessary
Endangered institutions must take steps to strengthen their security measures for their own protection. German counterintelligence has published a several dozen-page analysis of group 29155's activities and software, as well as suggestions on how to defend against attacks.
At the beginning of this year, Germany accused Russia of cyberattacks on the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which co-governs Germany, and on logistics, defense, aviation, and IT companies.
The GRU unit, which includes group 29155, is suspected of involvement in the attempted poisoning of former GRU agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the United Kingdom in 2018.
