As the presidential elections in the USA approach, Kamala Harris is reportedly ahead in Iowa, a state previously considered a Republican stronghold.
According to the recent Ann Selzer and "Des Moines Register" poll released on Saturday, Harris has a lead over Trump in the agricultural state with 47 percent to 44 percent. This is a notable shift from the September poll, where Trump led with 47 percent compared to Harris's 43 percent.
Harris can count on women's votes
The "Des Moines Register" noted that a Harris victory in Iowa would be a "shocking event" given Iowa's recent hard-right turn in previous elections.
The main factor benefiting the Democratic candidate is the support from politically independent women who are concerned about Trump's return to power. Harris leads among these women by 28 percentage points.
Immediate reaction from Trump's team
Trump's team promptly responded to the surprising poll. Republican candidate associates shared results from an Emerson College poll. According to the campaign's website, "It better reflects the state of the actual Iowa electorate and does so with far more transparency in their methodology."
The Emerson College poll conducted in Iowa suggests a similarly significant victory for Trump, with him leading 53-43 percent. This same poll, conducted on the eve of the 2020 election, showed Trump with only a two-point lead over Biden.
In 2016 and 2020, Trump secured victories in Iowa by margins of 10 and 8 percentage points, respectively.
