The Dutch authorities have decided to purchase 46 Leopard 2A8 tanks. This marks a significant step toward strengthening their army, which in 2011 was completely stripped of such armored vehicles.

"Tanks are essential for the appropriate combat strength of the armed forces. They have heavy weaponry and provide protection against enemy fire. With the reintroduction of battle tanks, the Netherlands will strengthen its armed forces. In this way, we also fulfill what NATO is asking of the Netherlands," said State Secretary for Defense Gijs Tuinman.

The Netherlands to buy Leopard 2A8 tanks

The first Leopard 2A8 tanks are expected to join the Dutch army in 2027, with the last units from the order arriving by 2030. At that point, the Dutch armed forces will be equipped with a full tank battalion, which will include 500 soldiers.

The Dutch authorities shifted their stance on armaments following Russia's annexation of Crimea. Since then, they have entered into various contracts for new military equipment. In September, the Netherlands retired the F-16, which is being replaced by newer F-35 fighter jets. They also plan to acquire NASAMS air defense systems, among other equipment, but the decision to purchase tanks garners the most attention. In 2011, due to budget cuts, the Netherlands completely abandoned its own tanks, relying instead on 18 leased Leopard 2A6 tanks from Germany.

Capabilities of the Leopard 2A8 tank

The Leopard 2A8 is the latest version of the renowned German tank, succeeding the 15-year-old Leopard 2A7. A key feature of the Leopard 2A8 is the EuroTrophy active protection system, previously used in American Abrams tanks. This system is designed to neutralize anti-tank-guided missiles and tank shells (from about 98 feet away) by firing counter-projectiles with explosively formed penetrators.

The Leopard 2A8 also features the latest optronics, communication systems, and a reinforced turret roof. Like its predecessor, it has a Rh 120/L55A1 120 mm gun and a coaxially mounted machine gun powered by a 1,600 horsepower engine.
