The United States launched these targeted airstrikes overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, Eastern Time, on underground weapon depots in regions of Yemen held by pro-Iranian Houthi rebels, announced U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
American forces targeted several underground Houthi facilities that housed various types of weaponry used by the rebels to attack civilian trading ships and warships throughout the region, according to a statement from the Pentagon. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on the social networking site X that the effects of the attacks are under assessment, but currently, there are no indications of civilian casualties.
The West combats Houthi forces
Reuters reminds us that since November of last year, Houthi fighters, in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israeli army operation in the Gaza Strip, have carried out nearly 100 attacks from Yemeni territory on ships navigating the Red Sea. They sank two vessels, resulting in the deaths of at least four sailors.
U.S. forces also targeted Houthi-owned facilities at the beginning of October, destroying 15 targets at that time.
