Russia eyes Greenland: Kremlin's new geopolitical ambition

Geopolitical tensions surrounding Greenland are escalating, with Russia seeking to insert itself into the American-Danish dispute. Speaking on state television, a Russian lawmaker suggested that Greenland should be divided into sections, proposing potential negotiations with Trump. He also hinted at a comparable scenario for the Svalbard archipelago, raising further concerns about territorial ambitions.

Comments made by Donald Trump regarding Greenland continue to make waves. At a press conference, the American president-elect emphasized that "the USA needs the island for the country's economic security." He did not dismiss the possibility of the United States using force to take Greenland from Denmark.

Trump’s remarks have sparked an international scandal. The Axios portal reported that Danish authorities are engaging in discussions with Donald Trump's team about the security of Greenland.

Russian politicians are beginning to seriously engage with the issue. The island has piqued the interest of Moscow authorities for years. The Kremlin desires Greenland for both geopolitical and economic reasons. Donald Trump's words have once again highlighted the issue in Russian media.

Does Russia need Greenland? A Russian politician thinks so

Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulev explicitly stated that "Russia undoubtedly needs Greenland" and suggested dividing the island.

We need Greenland, no joke. At the very least, we could make a deal with Trump and split Greenland into a couple of pieces. It is clear that Denmark will never be there again. Svalbard is also extremely important to us. There will be some very nice [Russian] bases - Gurulev stated.

Gurulev's statements were attentively heard by guests in the studio, including Vladimir Solovyov.

Solovyov highlighted that defense should always be transformed into an offense, expressing approval of this approach while summarizing the Russian lawmaker's message.
