Russian bombers get unusual protection against drone threats

Once again, the Russians have resorted to an unconventional method to protect their bombers. The aircraft stationed at the Olenya air base, a frequent target of Ukrainian drone attacks, have been shielded with car tires. Satellite images show that these tires have been placed on the wings of the Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 bombers, which are used for airstrikes on Ukraine.

As noted by the Defense Romania service, over the past few months, there have been at least three attacks on the Russian Olenya air base, located just 125 miles from the borders of Finland and Norway. Ukrainians have attempted to strike the bombers stationed there using drones. The Russians employ these bombers to carry cruise missiles launched towards Ukraine.

Russians secure bombers with tires

The latest satellite images provided by Google Earth suggest that the Russians are apprehensive about potential future attacks on the base. The tires placed on the wings of the strategic Tu-95MS bombers indicate this. Defense Romania notes that there can be anywhere from 12 to even 20 tires on each aircraft. In the case of the Tu-22M3 bombers, the tires are also placed on the fuselages.

The effectiveness of this solution is unclear. However, it's certain that the Russians have employed this tactic before. Old car tires were observed on aircraft stationed at the Engels air base, for instance. At the time, there were suggestions that this method was intended to protect the bombers not only from drone strikes but also from Ukrainian Neptune cruise missiles.

Russian strategic bombers

The Tu-22M3 and Tu-95MS bombers are among the most significant aircraft in Russia's arsenal. Despite their age, they still play crucial roles, as highlighted by the conflict in Ukraine. The Tu-95MS, also known as "Bears," are long-range strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons. These bombers are known for their exceptional durability and ability to conduct long-duration flights, exceeding 7,456 miles. Their arsenal includes cruise missiles like the Kh-55, capable of hitting targets thousands of miles away. The Tu-95MS bombers are also equipped with modern navigation and defense systems, allowing them to avoid enemies and carry out strategic missions effectively.

The Tu-22M3, also known as "Backfire," is a versatile long-range bomber that functions as both a tactical and strategic bomber. This aircraft can carry various types of armaments, including conventional bombs, nuclear bombs, and guided missiles with a range of up to 373 miles. Additionally, the Tu-22M3 can conduct precise strikes on key ground and maritime targets. Thanks to advanced navigation and radar systems, this aircraft can effectively execute missions in challenging combat conditions, both day and night. Its high maximum speed and ability to operate at various altitudes make the Tu-22M3 a very difficult target for air defense systems.
