spain's secret winter aid boosts ukraine's air defenses
Spain provided Ukraine with six air defense systems at a crucial time during the winter when Russia was planning attacks on energy infrastructure, reports the Ukrainian agency Unian, citing statements from Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to Zelensky's statement during the international "Support Ukraine" conference in Kyiv, Spain delivered these air defense systems at a critical moment. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain secretly supplied weapons to Ukraine precisely when they were most needed—during the winter.
Weapons from Spain secretly delivered to Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that his visit to Spain during a challenging period in the winter led to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's decision to support Ukraine. "Pedro made a decision that was very necessary for us," said Zelensky, expressing gratitude for the assistance in the form of six air defense systems. The President of Ukraine did not disclose which specific systems were secretly provided by Spain, but it's important to note that as early as 2024, Madrid sent six MIM-23 Hawk systems to Ukraine. It is reasonable to assume that the secret support involved these same weapons. The support from Spain also included artillery missiles, ammunition for Patriot systems, and Leopard tanks.
Additionally, during the international meeting in Kyiv, Pedro Sánchez announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $1.1 billion. The Prime Minister assured that Spain would continue to support Ukraine by providing military and technical equipment as long as necessary.
MIM-23 Hawk System
The MIM-23 Hawk, also known as the Homing All the Way Killer, is an American medium-range surface-to-air missile system. It was initially designed in the 1960s in response to the need for defense against the aviation capabilities of the former Soviet Union.
Originally, the MIM-23 Hawk system could target and shoot down threats at distances up to 16 miles and altitudes up to 9 miles. However, the system underwent significant modifications to enhance its effectiveness, ultimately extending its range to 25 miles.
Currently, the MIM-23 Hawk is employed in Ukraine to counteract threats such as Su-25 and Su-24 aircraft, as well as older types of cruise missiles like the Kh-102. This system is also capable of neutralizing Shahed drones, broadening its range of applications.
