Trump administration considers total halt on Ukraine aid

The administration of President Donald Trump is contemplating the cancellation of all U.S. aid to Ukraine, including the recently approved deliveries of military equipment and ammunition, according to the "New York Times." After unsuccessful talks at the White House, a representative from the administration suggested that supporting Ukraine will become solely a European responsibility.

The U.S. administration may terminate all military aid to Ukraine, which encompasses funding the army, sharing intelligence data, and training soldiers, as reported by the "New York Times." This potential move was indicated by an official from President Donald Trump's administration following the breakdown of Friday's discussions between the U.S. president and Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

The Pentagon estimates that about $3.85 billion remains in the U.S. budget for military assistance to Ukraine. The final equipment deliveries, which were approved during Joe Biden's presidency, are scheduled to conclude within the next six months. Subsequently, the responsibility of supporting the Ukrainian army will be transferred to European countries and other allies.

This is how much the United States has provided

Since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the Pentagon has supplied Ukraine with weapons and ammunition valued at $33.8 billion through 71 shipments from the Department of Defense stocks.

Under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) program, Kyiv received an additional $33.2 billion to acquire new equipment directly from American companies. As noted by the "NYT," the last installment of this program was approved on December 30, 2024, and since January—under Trump's administration—no new military aid for Ukraine has been announced.

According to the American newspaper, the Trump administration may advance measures that could result in a total withdrawal of support for Ukraine. This could involve not only halting future weapons deliveries but also suspending intelligence cooperation, ceasing the training of Ukrainian soldiers, and shutting down the international aid coordination center at the U.S. military base in Germany.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, European countries have thus far allocated $138 billion to support Ukraine, while the USA has contributed $119 billion for military and humanitarian aid. The "NYT" evaluates that the possible withdrawal of support by the USA would be a "shocking abandonment of a partner country" and could signify the cessation of American support for Ukraine.
