Trump enlists Putin for nuclear talks with Iran
According to Bloomberg, Donald Trump asked Vladimir Putin to mediate in talks about nuclear arms with Iran. A source from the agency indicates that the Russian leader expressed interest in Trump's proposal.
Reports suggest that during a phone conversation in February, Trump reached out to Putin on this issue. This proposal was set to be discussed in greater detail a few days later during US-Russian negotiations in Saudi Arabia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Bloomberg that "Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations". He added that Moscow "is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this".
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked whether Russia would mediate the talks with the USA and replied that it is "natural" for other countries to offer assistance.
Russia is back in the game. Americans ended the isolation
The talks in Riyadh, which took place on February 18, were the first high-level meeting between US and Russian delegations since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. No specific decisions were announced after the talks concluded, only expressions of willingness to cooperate between the USA and Russia in various areas.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the talks in Riyadh were a preliminary step rather than official negotiations, and that Ukraine and Europe would participate once formal discussions begin.
On February 12, US President Donald Trump mentioned he expects to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, possibly in Saudi Arabia, but did not specify a date.
