The federal appeals court in Manhattan, New York, upheld the jury's decision, which found Donald Trump guilty of sexually assaulting and defaming journalist E. Jean Carroll. Additionally, the court ordered Trump to pay $5 million in damages.
Trump did not prove court errors
The appellate judges unanimously concluded that Trump did not prove the lower court made errors in its previous rulings.
We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings. Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination of claimed errors affected his substantial rights as required to warrant a new trial, the appeals court stated.
E. Jean Carroll, a columnist for Elle magazine, testified that in the spring of 1996, Trump allegedly turned their friendly meeting into a brutal attack in a fitting room at Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York. Carroll first made these accusations in her 2019 book. Trump denied these accusations.
