Trump's "Swiss" watches raise eyebrows over origins
A certain presidential candidate, Donald Trump, sells watches—allegedly "Swiss-made" and "designed for the president." The most expensive ones are priced in the six-figure range. Journalists investigated their origins, but their search didn't lead to Switzerland.
"You're going to love them. Would make a great Christmas Gift," wrote Donald Trump on his social media platform, promoting the "Swiss" watches from TheBestWatchesonEarth, branded with his name. The Republican presidential candidate assures buyers that owning one places them in "a very exclusive club."
If you consider the pricing alone—perhaps that's true. The most expensive "Tourbillon" model costs $100,000 and is set to begin shipping this month. However, it hasn't yet received approval from luxury watch reviewers. Oisin O'Malley commented that they look computer-designed, while Tim Mosso remarked it's "a little bit ominous" that the most expensive model can't get near water.
CNN journalists attempted to trace Trump's business partner involved in selling the watches "designed to embody President Trump’s fighting spirit." Rather than Switzerland, they found themselves at a single-story office in Sheridan, a small town in northern Wyoming.
Opaque arrangement
CNN reports that the Wyoming address is exclusively owned by TheBestWatchesonEarth, a company established this summer.
"Little is known or discoverable about the company now working with the Republican nominee for president, including the person or persons behind it," the portal states.
It continues, "like other ventures Trump has launched while running for president, these watches are the result of an opaque arrangement." CNN highlights that the former White House resident's campaign team has not responded to questions regarding the matter, and no one is present at the company's headquarters to provide answers.
Neither Trump’s campaign nor the Trump Organization responded to a detailed list of questions from CNN about his partnership with TheBestWatchesOnEarth, including who is behind the company, how the deal came to pass and whether he vetted the people behind his new business venture," the portal writes.
