Turkey unveils major naval expansion with carrier, destroyer, sub

The Turkish Navy has initiated the construction of three significant projects: the aircraft carrier MUGEM, the destroyer TF-2000, and the submarine MILDEN, as reported by the Naval News portal. This development signifies the emergence of a new maritime power in the region, directly under Russia's observation.

A spokesperson from the Turkish Defense Ministry provided details regarding these new constructions during a press conference and subsequently published them on the ministry's official social media accounts. Turkey, which boasts NATO's second-largest army, continues to maintain good relations with Russia while asserting its leadership at sea. It's important to note that Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 systems led to its exclusion from the F-35 program.

New projects of the Turkish navy

The steel-cutting ceremonies for MUGEM and TF-2000 took place at the naval shipyard in Istanbul, while the ceremony for MILDEN was conducted at the naval shipyard in Gölcük. These projects aim to enhance the operational capabilities of the Turkish fleet.

The aircraft carrier MUGEM, set to be publicly showcased in February 2024, is expected to have three runways and the capacity to carry up to 50 aircraft. These will include manned and unmanned units, such as the TAI Hurjet and Bayraktar Kızılelma.

The largest ship built under the new program

The destroyer TF-2000, part of the MILGEM program, is projected to be the largest ship built. Its armaments will feature missile systems like MİDLAS and ATMACA anti-ship missiles.

The MILDEN submarine, which has been under development since 2012, will be equipped with an air-independent propulsion system, enhancing its operational capabilities. It is expected to be ready for service in the first half of the 2030s.

These projects constitute a broader strategy to modernize the Turkish Navy, aiming to strengthen its combat and operational capabilities at sea. Turkish authorities underscore that these investments are crucial for national security.

Turkish aircraft carrier MUGEM

The MUGEM aircraft carrier is designed as a vital component to strengthen the Turkish Navy. It measures 935 feet in length and 236 feet in width, with a draft of 33 feet. Its impressive displacement of 60,000 tons allows it to reach a maximum speed exceeding 29 miles per hour. With these specifications, MUGEM can travel up to 11,500 nautical miles while maintaining its typical cruising speed.

The carrier's propulsion system is based on the COGAG system. It utilizes four LM2500 gas turbines, each generating 23 MW, making the vessel particularly efficient. MUGEM can accommodate at least 800 personnel and offers space for 50 aircraft, both manned and unmanned.

Moreover, the ADVENT CMS combat management system provides advanced combat capabilities, and the innovative bow design contributes to a 1.5% reduction in fuel consumption and improved underwater noise suppression. The overall project showcases Turkey's high technological level in the field of modern warships.
