What do you need to know?

  • Turkey as a strategic partner: Ukraine considers Turkey a key partner for security guarantees, emphasized President Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • Free trade agreement: Kyiv is prepared to sign a free trade agreement with Ankara to strengthen economic cooperation between the countries.
  • Military support: Turkey supports Ukraine militarily by providing Bayraktar drones, a significant element of their cooperation.

What are the plans for Ukraine's cooperation with Turkey?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted Turkey's importance as a strategic security partner. On Thursday, during a meeting in Kyiv with Turkish ministers of trade and agriculture, opportunities for cooperation in drone production and the involvement of Turkish companies in Ukraine's reconstruction were discussed.

"It is important that Turkish businesses are already present in Ukraine. Our country appreciates this, as well as Türkiye’s support and assistance, particularly the supply of Bayraktar drones," wrote Zelensky on X.

Why is Turkey an important partner for Ukraine?

As a NATO member, Turkey maintains balanced relations with both Ukraine and Russia. Since Russia's aggression against Ukraine in 2022, Turkey has supported Ukraine militarily while declining to join the sanctions against Russia. As noted by the French newspaper "Le Monde," Turkey is one of the few regional powers capable of cooperating with Russia while limiting its influence.

What are the prospects for the future?

According to Reuters, Turkey has become a key potential partner for Ukraine's security. Europe is working to strengthen its own defenses and secure guarantees for Kyiv within a potential ceasefire agreement with Moscow. Cooperation with Turkey could play a significant role in these efforts.
