Ukrainian forces suffer setbacks with major vehicle losses in Kursk
Since early August 2024, Ukrainian armed forces have been storming the Russian Kursk region. Amid the successes of the defending army, there have unfortunately been some setbacks, including the loss of valuable equipment in a Russian ambush.
David Axe, an analyst with Forbes, notes that the Ukrainian forces fell into a "cruel ambush" south of the city of Veseloe, located a few miles over the border from Ukraine. The army lost significant valuable equipment used in military operations in the Kursk region.
They lost dozens of valuable vehicles
Soldiers of the Russian Federation repelled the Ukrainian attack, destroying approximately 16 armored vehicles. These vehicles are among the most esteemed in the local arsenal, including Swedish CV90s, German Marders, and American Strykers.
Ukraine is deploying its most valuable equipment in the Kursk operation. However, according to the Forbes analyst, even these elite formations are struggling to break through the towns just over the Russian border into Ukraine. The Russians are also encountering problems. As reported by David Axe, while the Russian army is losing equipment en masse, Putin's forces have a larger reserve to cover their losses.
What did the Ukrainians lose?
The CV90, also known as the Combat Vehicle 90, is a Swedish infantry fighting vehicle that has been repeatedly modernized and adapted to various combat conditions. Known for its versatility, it is capable of operating in a wide range of missions, from reconnaissance to intense battles.
One of the key aspects of the CV90 is its armor, which offers a high level of protection for both the crew and the infantry. It features various armor modules that can be adjusted depending on the mission. Its steel hull, along with additional ceramic and composite elements, provides protection against different kinds of weapon fire. Thanks to its advanced protection system, the CV90 can withstand attacks from small arms and light artillery.
Another important feature of the CV90 is its mobility. Powered by a diesel engine that provides high power and torque, the CV90 efficiently traverses difficult terrain, reaching speeds of up to 45 mph with an operational range of about 310 miles. This allows it to quickly respond to changing combat conditions.
They lost German Marders and American Strykers
The Marder is a German infantry fighting vehicle that has played a crucial role in the German army for decades. It is valued for its reliability, versatility, and the advanced technologies incorporated in its construction.
One of the main advantages of the Marder is its armor. Equipped with steel protection, the Marder defends against machine gun fire and light artillery. Additionally, it can be outfitted with composite modules depending on mission requirements. Its armor has been tested and proven effective in various combat conditions.
The Marder also carries powerful weaponry, including a 20 mm cannon and MILAN anti-tank guided missiles, enabling it to support infantry effectively and engage enemy armored vehicles. With an advanced fire control system, the Marder’s crew can accurately target enemies at long distances, significantly enhancing its combat effectiveness.
The Stryker is notable for its mobility. With all-wheel drive, this vehicle can reach speeds of up to 60 mph, making it highly effective in dynamic combat operations. Its operational range of approximately 310 miles allows for extended patrols and quick responses to threats.
